About Winter Guard & Winter Drumline
High school color guard winter tournament season, known as Winter Guard, runs from January through April. During this time, color guard teams perform indoors in gymnasiums, separate from marching band, focusing on choreographed routines that combine dance, flag work, rifle spinning, and other props. Guards are judged on elements such as movement, equipment handling, and overall effect. The season culminates with a championship.
Drumline also has a winter tournament season, as part of the WGASC circuit. Similar to winter guard, Drumline will perform in gyms rather than on fields. Groups combine marching percussion, front ensemble (pit), choreography, theatrical effects, costumes, props, lighting, and storytelling.
