Competition

Fall tournament season officially begins in early October.  The Band chooses 6-8 tournaments throughout San Diego and LA to attend.  Tournaments are usually on a Saturday, and are all day events. We start the day with warm ups and preparation, meeting well ahead of the tournament time.  Students most often travel with the Band to and from the tournament.

SCSBOA tournaments are judged by experienced professionals.

Each key element of the performance—Music, Visual, Color Guard, and Percussion—are judged separately.  Those scores are combined to create an overall score.  Judging focuses on both what is performed and how it's executed. For example, were the visuals effective, was the story conveyed clearly, and how well was the music played? These criteria help assess the effectiveness and artistry of the overall performance.

Our goal every Fall is to make it to our class championship.  Typically held the Saturday before Thanksgiving, this championship is open only to the top scoring bands in each size class in Southern California.  RBV is a championship level band program!  We have had the honor of going to championships for nearly every year for over 25 years.

Tournaments are equal parts competition and performance. While audience members are asked to not use any flash photography, or be disruptive in the stands so that the musicians and guard can shine - cheers and applause are very welcome.  Plan to show up on time and know that you will not be allowed into the stands until there is a break in the band performances.  Audience members should be mindful of others in the stands, allowing them to have a clear view of the field, and refrain from talking through performances.
