This section is for newer parents to the program.

Your Student 

Our goal as an organization is to see our students excel at Music and Dance.  We teach teamwork, perseverance, organizational skills, music theory, music in motion and respect for others.  Music enriches our students, their families and the community they perform for. 

One benefit our students take from their Band and Color Guard experience, is the great friendships they develop with each other.  Our students come to feel part of this extended family, which helps them enjoy their High School Years more.  The Band room, for example, is a place many Band and Color Guard students congregate before, during and after school – a positive safe haven.

How it all fits together

The year for a Band and Color Guard Student consists of many differing activities, which can seem overwhelming at first.  Take a deep breath and think about the old adage of eating an elephant – it’s one bite at a time, and the band board is here to help you get through each bite.

Rancho Buena Vista Band and Pageantry, Inc., is the non-profit boosters organization that supports the activities of the Band and Color Guard.  The school district pays to cover 1 Full Time Band Director ( Was 2 until 2010-2011 ).  All the other expenses fall on the Band Boosters or “Ranch Hands” – which is all of us.  The board consists of volunteer parents who have come together to help run the program for all the students.  You will find the board members listed in the About Us tab at the top menu.

Summer – Training Camp

Marching Band Camp is 2 weeks of intensive training at the end of every summer, usually in August.  This is a mandatory requirement for all Band and Color Guard Students.  Practices are all day, 5 days per week.  Freshman come for and extra few days before the entire band comes out, so we may give them more individualized basic training.

Fall - Marching Season begins! 

Have you ever seen a College Football Game, where the half-time show is a big band marching cool patterns on the Football Field?  That is what our kids are going to learn to do well during Marching Band.

They will spend time in class during the day of school, learning the music.  Twice a week for 3 hours each evening, usually Mondays and Thursdays, from 5:30 to 8:30 PM, our students will practice Marching on the Football Field.

Every other Saturday, we have an all-day practice at the school - half the day in the classroom, half the day on the field.

Tournaments - Let the competition begin

Marching Band and Color Guard Tournaments are simply marching competitions against other High Schools,  all over Southern California.   Between 20 and 30 High School Bands get together and strut their stuff – Marching Madness, Magnificent Music and Flags Flying. 

We usually compete at 5-6 Tournaments from October through November of each year.  See the calendar for call times, location, map and other details.

During Marching Season, students practice two evenings a week and a few Saturdays.  Freshman parents - worry not.   Many band students take Honors, AP and even IB and do very well.  Busy kids are happy kids.   They'll have to put aside video games and Facebook to make it work - this is a good thing!

And at the end of the season, our students have the opportunity to go to a local amusement park together!  The past few years the students have voted for Magic Mountain.  There is an overnight stay after our last tournament, and in the morning the students hit the park.   Your student account must be up to date.  Those not attending will be brought back following the tournament.

Events – Help us pay for the program

These events showcase the skills our students practice so hard to acquire during their training.  We also raise money at these events to supplement the program.  “Fair Share” contributions cover about half of the actual cost of running our Band and Color Guard Program, therefore our Events are a critical part of making up the difference.    ( See the Annual Contributions Tab, in the Parents section of the Menu, for more details on fees )

RBV Home Varsity Football Games start in September of each school year.  The featured half time show is, you guessed it, Rancho Buena Vista Band and Color Guard!  The Band also sells food at the Snack Bar / Concessions during the game, which helps us raise mucho dinero.  It will take 30 band parent volunteers per game to run the snack bar smoothly.   Football games are on Friday Nights – the students need to be there early.  Check the calendar for dates and times.

RBV Premier Tournament is usually in the middle of October.   This is the one tournament that RBV Band and Color Guard hosts, attracting 25-30 High School Bands from all over Southern California.  Through concessions, entry fees, program advertising and vendor fees, we raise a considerable amount of funds.  This is our biggest fundraising event of the year!

Disneyland always invites Rancho Buena Vista Band and Color Guard to march main street every January.  8th graders from the local middles schools usually attend with us.   Our students get to ride the rides while there! 

Other Events include our Holiday Concert, Toys for Tots, Disneyland Invitational, Round-Up, Showdown, and POPs Concert.

POPs is held near the end of the year.  During this 3-day Gala Event the Concert Bands will perform for parents, relatives and the invited community.  POPs always has a differing theme - with movie music or other popular music, played in concert style.  This is our second biggest event of the year.

Fundraisers – Opportunities to raise money for you and for Band

Scrip, See’s Candy, Innisbrook Wrapping Paper, Rummage Sale – a few of the programs designed to help you raise your “Fair Share” .  See the Fundraising section for more details.

Tournament Program Sales Ads, Buick Open Ticket Sales, DVD Yearbook Momento Sales and POPs Program Advertising – additional fundraising activities designed to help the General Band costs for the program.

Remember, your Fair Share only cover about half of the needed funds to run the entire program.  The rest has to be raised through fundraisers or donations from the community.

Coaching- Thank You Very Much

When you come to practices, you will see a small group of adults coaching our students.  All are experts in various parts of field shows.  Band Boosters pay for the coaches to teach our students how to develop the skills needed for musical and marching success.   Please thank them whenever you can, many long hours go into developing the great program they all create for us to enjoy.
